To ensure the safety of arriving and departing aircraft, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have designated specific protected airspace over airports, which must remain free of obstacles. This protected airspace is referred to as airport zone and extends in an oval shape over the airport area.
 
In Austria, airport zones have been established for five international airports Graz, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Salzburg, and Vienna-Schwechat.
 
If you intend to operate your drone within one of these airport zones, you must obtain an operational authorization from Austro Control in accordance with § 18 (4) of the 2014 Air Traffic Regulations before conducting your flight.
